El Año Nuevo

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:05 pm by rynserenity

Huh. Would you look at that? It’s the last blog entry for 2007. What happened to this year?! I feel like it went so fast. Normally, I like to make a list of things I’ve accomplished over the year, and I shall do so– but, I will limit myself only to knitterly things. So, in the year 2007, here’s what I accomplished:

* I started this blog!
* I knit my first large-scale lace project (the Showdrop Shawl).
* I learned to knit socks (the Pool Socks), and have subsequently become addicted.
* I taught myself to cable without a cable needle.
* I learned how to spin.
* I managed to buy all of the Interweave Knits issues that came out this year (hey, that’s an accomplishment for me).
* I got my Ravelry invite!
* I have taken the first step towards having and honest-to-god Stash with a capital “S”. I have started buying yarn without having an actual purpose for it:

These two delicious skeins of Noro Kureyon (colourway 199, but I think I’ll call it “Peacock”) found their way into my shopping bag when I went to Stone Mountain and Daughter to get a button for the Squatty Sidekick. I think they will become a long-coveted Argosy; I heart that scarf!

Also, remember that Manos Del Uruguay I bought a few days ago?

Yeah, it’s kind of becoming a scarf. This is most of those two skeins I bought, knit up into most of a Short Row Rib scarf. The yarn is marvelously squishy, beautifully dyed, and spun in a way that makes me aspire to be a much better spinner so I can have yarn like these guys. The pattern’s fun, too: easily memorized, but provides enough spice so that I have to concentrate a little. Perfect winter break knitting. Look at this great texture!

(Sorry if it’s hard to see, but photographing knitware at 7:00pm without an assistant is a wee bit tricky.)

Yeah, you think I’ve got enough scarves? They are my most favourite of accessories, because they go with everything. Also, I live in the SF Bay Area. I frequently need to wear a scarf in July.

Whoops! That was the doorbell. I have company coming over, and need to play hostess. See you in 2008, everyone!

Fa La La La… What Day is it?

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:19 pm by rynserenity

Woah man, have I been in a fog this week. Literally, it’s foggy out here. Looking out my window, I can barely see across the street. I am hyper-sensitive to barometric pressure changes, so I have been walking around with such a headache for the past few days; just rain already, dangit!

Speaking of rain, Christmas was great! (hey, it’s the Bay Area. We don’t get “white Christmas”; we get “wet Christmas”) There was lots of good food (most of which was cooked by either me or my mother), great company, and, of course, hand-knit gifts. And you know what? I finished my Christmas knitting on time. Oh, yes!

Since Christmas is over, I can show you the “secret project”:

This was a Moss Stitch Beret for my aunt Chris (yes, that Chris. The one who guest-blogged whilst I was in Hawaii), in Cascade 220. I think it’s one of my favourite yarns now. It felts like a dream! Speaking of which:

I finished the Squatty Sidekick just in time! I don’t have any post-felting pictures, but I can get some at a later date. It still needs a button, but I wanted the recipient to pick it out. FO to come at a later date, I believe.

And last, but not least, the scarf:

This was for my friend Katya, who once upon a time tried to teach me to crochet, back when we were eight or so. I learned, but thought it was stupid, and taught myself to knit instead. The rest, they say, is history. This was a fun pattern! A great way to use up stash remnants, I may have to make another for myself, maybe this time using some of my own handspun.

And the last FO of the Christmas season:

Yup. Tiny socks for the Christmas tree. It probably took me, at most, an hour to knit this thing. It was so tiny and precious that it was all I could do to not knit a bazillion more of them.

Aaaaand… (I need to stop writing such long, picture-intensive entries) speaking of sock yarn: Look! Presents!

Ooooh, yeah. Look at all that fiber-y goodness. In the picture, from left to right, is: A quarter pound of some of the most delicious sea green roving which was a Secret Santa gift from my friend Aryn, who is also a spinner, and has excellent taste; two skeins of “Sock” from ShiBui Knits, in the colourway “Marine”; two skeins of Manos Del Uruguay, in the colourway “Canyon”, which is destined to (possibly) become a “My So-Called Scarf“; and a big fat skein of Lana Grossa “Meilenweit”, in a yummy, springy sort of colourway that I’ll just call “raspberry fudge ripple”. As you can see, it’s already attached to a toe-up Jaywalker:

Mmm, stripes…

Yeah, I think this entry is plenty long enough. Coming up this week: FO entries for all the Christmas gifts, swatching for Spring Shawl Surprise, Secret of the Stole II, and Dem Fischer Sin Fru. Yeah, I’m SO not keeping up with all those clues…

Days Until Christmas: 7

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:24 pm by rynserenity

Dear readers,

Please excuse my absence. I kinda… er, fell off of the internet. Again. The month of December, which contains three holidays I celebrate (Hannukah(kind of), Yule, and Christmas), so I have been a very, very busy knitter! While I was falling off the internet, I spent the month of December doing the following:

Getting a new boyfriend TV:

Decorating gingerbread houses:

Making a crazy number (2d6, to be nerdy) of polyhedral dice earrings:

(Psst! Want a pair of your own? If I get my ass in gear, I hope to have my own Esty shop open in the new year! For now, drop me an e-mail at RynSerenity(at)gmail(dot)com, and we’ll work something out.)

Decorating a Christmas tree (and a dachshund):

(Louie’s “helping”)

And knitting:

(no, that’s not a current project. That is a long-ago frogged project. Don’t get your hopes up too high.)

Yes, not only have I managed to knit this month, I’ve actually managed to finish some things! The nice thing about the holidays is that I feel so productive! And panicky. Don’t forget panicky.

Anywho, I managed to finish two projects: the Cable Twist Socks, and a secret project I can’t show you (because the recipient reads The Blog). I don’t have pictures of the socks right now, because my camera battery died mid-photo shoot, so that FO will have to wait until tomorrow. I also have to more projects on the needles:

A mostly-finished Amanda’s Squatty Sidekick, in the luscious, squishy (and affordable!) Cascade 220:

And this:

No, it’s not one of those crazy hyperbolic forms that I’ve seen people knit (although I’d like to make one of those). It’s the beginning of A Scarf Around, a pattern from the talented Maya (I wish I could spin like her…). I thought it would be a quick project (it has been so far), and a good way to get my feet wet in the pool of steeking. The steek you create is sliced open and unraveled to become fringe! How clever is that? I am thoroughly impressed. I just hope I have enough yarn to finish the stripe sequence… (crosses fingers)

Whew! Long catchup post! I hope I don’t fall off of the internet for that long again. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to drink some apple cider and knit like a fiend. Only seven more knitting days (and nights!) until Christmas…

Bring Out Your Dead!

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:20 pm by rynserenity

Hey, guys. I’m alive, I swear. I was really, really sick all of last week (I’m talking  really sick. Like, not able to KNIT sick), so I kinda fell off of the internet for a while. Now that I’m able to get out of bed (and knit) again, I’m back in school and back in the swing of things.  Woo hoo!

I’m not at home right now, so I don’t have my camera. However, I’ll do  project update (and an FO!) when I get home in a few hours.

Just wanted to let you know I’m not dead.
